This is the website of a project funded by National Science Foundation grant SBE #0920888. The prinicipal investigator of the project is Željko Bošković, Professor in the Department of Linguistics, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Connecticut. The co-principal investigator is Jon Gajewski, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics. The goal of the project is to discover and explain the syntactic and semantic differences between languages that have articles and those that do not. The main hypothesis being explored is that languages that lack definite articles lack a DP projection. The project emphasizes large-scale comparison of languages from many different language families. The project ran from September 2009 to August 2012.
